LAS CRUCES, NM - A search is continuing for one of the drivers involved in an incident that led to a fatal crash in Las Cruces last month, reports KVIA.
The wreck, which was believed to have involved two vehicles that were street racing, took place in the area of Lohman Avenue and Espina Street on Feb. 21.
According to police, a 17-year-old boy was speeding while driving a Dodge Ram eastbound on Lohman Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. The teen said he was racing another vehicle at the time on Lohman. The 17-year-old went through a red light and collided with a Hyundai Sonata at the intersection with Espina Street.
A passenger in the Hyundai, 21-year-old Amanda Jean Murillo Gallegos, was pronounced dead after being taken to Mountain View Regional Medical Center. The driver of the car and two other female passengers were injured.
The 17-year-old Dodge Ram fled the scene on foot, police said, but turned himself in a short time later. He faces several charges, including vehicular homicide and knowingly leaving the scene of a crash that caused great bodily harm or death. The other driver involved in the street racing incident left the scene, and police are asking anyone with information on that driver's whereabouts to contact them.
