News: Plea deal reached in connection with fatal crash near Deming

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Authorities reached a plea agreement with a man charged in a fatal accident near Deming, reports KRQE.

The charges against 21-year-old Elton Jeremiah Gastelum of Albuquerque stem from a crash that occurred on September 18, 2021.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Gastelum had picked up illegal immigrants in an Acura SUV and circumvented a checkpoint, heading north on State Highway 11 near Deming.

Gastelum fled from Border Patrol agents, who gave chase.  Gastelum lost control of the vehicle which crashed and flipped, killing two of the immigrants.

Gastelum was initially charged with murder, aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, abuse of a child, and great bodily injury by vehicle.  Under the terms of the plea deal, he will face 10 to 13 years in prison when he is sentenced, our Albuquerque car accident attorney adds.
