Passenger killed in accident involving stolen vehicle in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, NM - One person died following an accident involving a stolen vehicle in Las Cruces early Saturday morning, KTSM reports.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene in Young Park just after midnight and found that a 2017 Hyundai Tucson had been involved in a rollover crash in the parking lot. A passenger was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.  She was identified as 20-year-old Leilani Solis.

An investigation determined that earlier in the day, the driver of the vehicle had failed to comply with three attempted traffic stops but officers did not engage in a pursuit.

The owner of the Hyundai spotted it in the park shortly before midnight and notified police. Investigators said the driver initially sped away, then began following the owner and accelerated but hit a curb and the vehicle rolled over.

Three teenagers in the car fled the scene on foot but two were apprehended by police.  The 16-year-old driver faces multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle, aggravated fleeing from an officer and failure to report a crash.  Another passenger who fled, age 15, had yet to be located.
