ESPANOLA, NM - An investigation was underway following the death of a pedestrian in Espanola last week, reports the Santa Fe New Mexican.
Police said a woman was trying to walk across Riverside Drive Friday morning at about 6 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle driven by an Espanola City police officer who was heading south.
The victim, identified as 44-year-old Mary Antonette Garcia, was pronounced dead after being taken to Espanola Presbyterian Hospital.
A stretch of Riverside Drive was shut down for the accident investigation, which is being conducted by Espanola police and the New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit. Espanola's police chief said an internal investigation would also be done to ensure departmental policies had been followed properly in the incident.
