Truck driver dies in multi-vehicle crash at rest stop near Deming

DEMING, NM - A truck driver was killed in a multi-vehicle accident in Luna County last week, reports the Deming Headlight.

The crash occurred Tuesday afternoon at a rest stop on Interstate 10 east near mile marker 52 west of Deming.  According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, a total of five semi-trucks were involved in the collision.

Witnesses believe the driver of one of the trucks apparently lost control of his rig after losing a tire while going at high speed.  The truck continued into the rest stop where it slammed into the trailer of another truck, resulting in a chain-reaction collision involving several other vehicles.  At least three trucks caught fire from the impact.

The driver of the first truck was believed to have been the person who died in the wreck.  At least two other people were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Witnesses estimated the first driver was going at least 70 miles an hour in a 45 mile an hour zone.  The rest area was shut down for repairs to damage to the entrance ramp.  Should any additional information come to light, our Albuquerque truck accident lawyer will update this news blog.
