DEXTER, NM - A car wreck in southeast New Mexico left one person dead and four others hospitalized, authorities said.
In a Facebook post, New Mexico State Police said the accident happened July 21 in the area of U.S. 285 and East Darby Road outside Dexter at around 6:45 p.m.
NMSP's initial investigation indicated that a 16-year-old Dexter girl was driving a 2006 Pontiac Solstice when she stopped at the stop sign at U.S. 285. State Police said that for unknown reasons, the driver proceeded to cross U.S. 285 before it was safe to do so and the Pontiac was struck by a northbound 2016 Toyota Highlander.
The driver of the Pontiac and an 18-year-old passenger, Angela Andrews, were extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to an El Paso hospital, where Andrews died. The driver of the other vehicle, along with two passengers, including a 5-year-old boy, were taken to a local hospital.
State Police said seat belts appear to have been used in the crash. Investigators do not believe that alcohol was a contributing factor.
