Woman charged in hit-and-run that killed bicyclist in Las Vegas, NM

SANTA FE, NM - Police arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred last month in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports 23-year-old Mercedis Alexis Zimmerly of Las Vegas was taken into custody following the Dec. 23 incident.  Authorities believe Zimmerly was behind the wheel of an SUV that struck a bicyclist whose body was found near the Knights Inn on Grand Avenue.  The victim was identified as 32-year-old Justin Jaramillo of Las Vegas.

Evidence indicated that her vehicle had damage consistent with the accident, police said.  Zimmerly was charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated driving while intoxicated, and tampering with evidence.  She was booked into the San Miguel County jail.
