Driver dies after train crashes into SUV in Kosciusko County

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, IN - Authorities said a driver died following a railroad accident in Kosciusko County on Wednesday afternoon.

WTHR reports the crash happened at a railroad crossing on North Bishop Road in Turkey Creek Township at about 1 p.m.  Investigators determined that a 2005 Toyota Sequoia had stopped on the tracks for an unknown reason.  The vehicle was struck by a westbound CSX train, and was pushed for three-quarters of a mile west of the scene.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 55-year-old Stephen D. Schmahl of Syracuse, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene.  No one else was in the vehicle.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office is trying to determine the cause of the crash.
