Driver sentenced for fatal crash in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI - The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said a man was sentenced recently for causing a fatal car crash last year.

MLive.com reports Miguel Angel Huerta-Altamirano was charged with multiple counts for the July 3, 2023 wreck at West Cork Street and South Burdick Street.  Authorities said he was driving at about 75 miles per hour at about 1:39 p.m. when he went through a red light at the intersection and caused a crash with three other vehicles.

The driver of one of the vehicles died at the scene while the other two drivers sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.  Police said Huerta-Altamirano fled the scene but was arrested a short distance away and showed signs of intoxication

Huerta-Altamirano was sentenced in Kalamazoo County Court on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, and failing to stop at the scene of fatal crash.  He was ordered to serve a minimum of 4 1/2 years to 15 years in prison for each of the three charges with the sentences to run concurrently.
