CARMEL, IN - A fatal accident shut down a stretch of U.S. 31 in both directions in Carmel Wednesday morning, authorities said.
According to WXIN, the crash happened on U.S. 31 near the exit for Main Street at about 11 a.m. Carmel police said at least one person was killed, but no details were available on the identity of the victim or the circumstances that led to the incident.
All northbound and southbound lanes were closed on the highway for several hours between 136th Street and 146th Street. Traffic was being diverted onto Main Street and Smokey Road. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.
