Man charged in Mishawaka hit-and-run that killed bicycle rider

MISHAWAKA, IN - The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office has announced an arrest in the case of a bicyclist who was struck and killed by a vehicle in Mishawaka last week.

According to WNDU, the suspect is 49-year-old Robert Blankenship, who allegedly left the scene of the crash in the 1100 block of E. 12th Street last Tuesday morning.

Police said the victim, 19-year-old Varinder Singh of Mishawaka, had left work and was riding a bicycle in that area at about 6 a.m. when he was hit by Blankenship's dark-colored Chevrolet SUV.  Surveillance video in the area showed the SUV continuing to head west after the crash.

After examining car parts left at the scene and getting an anonymous tip, police located the SUV believed to have been involved at a home on Southwood Court.  The woman living there said the vehicle belonged to her son, Blankenship.

He was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
