Motorcycle passenger killed in crash with SUV in LaPorte County

LAPORTE COUNTY, IN - An alleged drunk driver was arrested following a fatal crash in LaPorte County on Monday night, authorities said.

According to WBND, the accident happened on State Road 2 near County Road 150 east.  The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office said the driver of a 2006 GMC SUV was headed east on State Road 2 and crashed into the back of an eastbound 2012 Honda motorcycle at about 8:50 p.m.  

Both occupants of the motorcycle were ejected.  The passenger, 73-year-old Cheryl Skidmore, died after being transported to an area hospital.  The operator of the bike, 82-year-old Larry Cummings, was injured.  Both are from Fort Myers, Florida.

The driver of SUV, 32-year-old Angel Almaraz of LaPorte, was not injured in the collision.  Deputies said he showed signs of impairment and was taken into custody at the scene.

Almarez was arrested on several charges - operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, and never receiving a license. He was being held in the county jail.
