South Bend man struck, killed by train near crossing in Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA, IN - Police are investigating the death of a man who was struck by a train in Mishawaka early Wednesday morning, reports the South Bend Tribune.

Police and first responders were called to the scene at the railroad crossing in the area of West Street and Spring Street at about 3:49 a.m.  An initial investigation determined that 43-year-old Gary Monaghan Jr. of South Bend was walking close to the tracks.  The train's conductor tried to alert him by sounding the train's horn multiple times but Monaghan was hit, and his body was found near the tracks.

Any witnesses with further information about the incident were asked to contact the Mishawaka Police Detective Bureau.
