Woman charged with causing fatal crash at Indianapolis food pantry

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Authorities said the driver involved in a fatal accident in Indianapolis earlier this year has been arrested.

According to a WXIN report, the incident happened in mid-February outside a food pantry in the vicinity of Franklin Road and 21st Street on the city's east side.  An SUV struck a man who was standing in line outside the pantry.  The victim, identified as 72-year-old Jeffrey Ayers, was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The driver of the SUV was 48-year-old Indra Gomes of Indianapolis, police said.  Tests after the crash showed that her blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.  She has now been charged with causing death while intoxicated and was held in jail on a $40,000 bond.

Gomes reportedly told police she struck Ayers after accidentally putting the car into drive instead of reverse.
