Examining The Use of Drones in Crash InvestigationsA Drone Resting By A Car

Crash investigation technology continues to evolve. The days of utilizing two tape measures and reference points are largely gone. Measuring tapes gave way to laser measuring devices, but they were difficult to transmit during adverse weather events such as rain and snow. Advancements in 3-dimensional scanning brought the presence of the Total Station and similar 3-dimensional scanning devices, which are still in use, but the advent of drone technology has changed the crash investigation landscape.

Why Drones Make a Difference

Drone utilization in crash investigation is helpful for many reasons. Many roadway marks that are not visible on a ground plane are highly visible from an elevated view provided by a drone. Tire tracks in grass, dirt, or through crops are clearer when viewed from a drone. Using thermal imaging in drones can also be useful when a crash has recently occurred; thermal image utilization might help locate car parts or human victims that were ejected and thrown a distance from the wreckage.

Drone Imaging & Mosaic Mapping A Drone in Motion

Drone photography provides an excellent overview of the crash scene and helps an investigator determine exactly what occurred in a complicated crash scenario. Another emerging trend, drone mosaic photography, is more beneficial than simple still photos. Here, a drone is programmed to fly and take images in an automated pattern. Depending on the size of the scene, the drone may collect hundreds of images. These are then electronically stitched together using GIS technology to create one detailed, high-resolution image.

This “mosaic image” is a to-scale visual of the crash scene with clear reference points, offering a powerful tool for crash analysis.
