PECOS CANYON, NM - A toddler died after being struck by a vehicle in Pecos Canyon on Saturday, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported.
New Mexico State Police and first responders were called to the scene near a campground north of Pecos after the incident occurred at about 5 p.m.
NMSP said the victim, a 3-year-old boy, was hit near the intersection of New Mexico 63 and Dalton Canyon Road. He had been camping in the area with friends, family and pets.
According to state police, the child was in the roadway along with some dogs. A driver going north on N.M. 63 stopped after seeing the dogs but once the dogs were removed, the driver did not realize the child was still there and the boy was hit by the car.
