Albuquerque firefighter struck, injured by alleged drunk driver

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Albuquerque Fire Rescue said one of its firefighters was struck and injured by an alleged drunk driver, according to a KOAT report.

The incident occurred Oct. 27 along Interstate 25 northbound near the Comanche Road exit.  AFR said the victim, a lieutenant, had been responding to a previous crash at about 2 a.m. and was returning to an ambulance when he was hit by a passing vehicle.

The firefighter was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Rebecca Melchor, 24, was arrested on charges of careless driving, an open container violation, and great bodily harm by vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

AFR Fire Chief Emily Jaramillo issued the following statement:  “This weekend, one of our own was seriously injured while answering a call for service.  AFR firefighters face these dangers daily, and we are reminded of their courage and commitment to service in moments like this. We hope for a full recovery and will continue to support him and his family as he recovers from these injuries.”
