Driver charged with DWI in fatal crash on I-25 in Bernalillo County

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A suspected drunk driver was arrested following a fatal crash on Interstate 25 in Bernalillo County Friday night, authorities said.

The New Mexico State Police said the incident involved two vehicles on I-25 north of Paseo Del Norte Boulevard near mile marker 235.

According to investigators, the driver of a 2023 Jeep SUV was heading north on the interstate at about 10 p.m. and rear-ended a 2003 Toyota pickup truck, causing the truck to roll over. The driver of the Toyota, 66-year-old Hector Beltran of Santa Fe, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in the Toyota, a 39-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, were taken to an area hospital but no details were released on their conditions.

The driver of the Jeep, 22-year-old Jonathan Lujan, was taken to an area hospital and then booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on DWI-related charges.

State Police investigating the wreck said alcohol and speed appear to have been contributing factors.
