ROOSEVELT COUNTY, NM - Authorities announced an arrest in connection with a fatal crash that occurred last week in Roosevelt County, according to the Eastern New Mexico News.
It happened Tuesday night at the intersection of State Road 267 and South Roosevelt Road V in Portales. A Chevrolet pickup truck and a Nissan sport utility vehicle were involved in a head-on collision. The Nissan driver, 22-year-old Rayleen Vasquez of Santa Rosa, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported seeing the alleged driver of the Chevrolet, 31-year-old Fredy Portillo, leaving the scene with a small child. He was arrested the next day after police said a passport found in the pickup was traced to him. Portillo was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in a death.
The 2-year-old boy who was with him was transported to Roosevelt General Hospital for treatment. New Mexico State Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
