Multi-vehicle wreck on New Mexico 26 kills 1, injures 2

DEMING, NM - The New Mexico State Police are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle accident that occurred July 2 in Luna County.

According to a news release, the crash took place on Highway 26 near mile marker 10 north of Deming at about 10 p.m.

State Police said a 1993 water tanker truck and a 2016 Commercial Motor Vehicle were both traveling east on Highway 26.  The CMV made contact with the rear of the tanker truck and went into the westbound lane of travel, causing a head-on collision with a 2019 Chevy SUV.

A passenger in the Chevy, identified as 77-year-old Kay Chandler of Deming, was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital. Another passenger in the Chevy and the driver of the CMV were hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.  The driver of the tanker truck was not injured.

The NMSP said alcohol did not appear to have been a contributing factor in the incident and seat belts appear to have been properly utilized.  Our Albuquerque car accident lawyer will provide any updates via this news blog as they are made publicly available.
