ROAD FORKS, NM - The New Mexico Department of Transportation alerted drivers to a fatal truck accident Wednesday that shut down a portion of Interstate 10.
According to an update from NMRoads at 7:11 a.m. Thursday, the incident happened on I-10 west at mile marker 5 in Arizona, near New Mexico 80 in Road Forks. It involved a semi-tractor trailer that went off the right side of the interstate, struck a guardrail and a bridge pillar. The Albuquerque Journal reports the truck driver was killed in the wreck.
I-10 west was closed and all westbound traffic was being diverted onto New Mexico 80 west of Lordsburg. Drivers were also being asked to detour north on Interstate 25 and take Interstate 40 west.
The closure was expected to be in place for at least another 24 hours while crews worked to repair the bridge overpass pillar damaged by the accident. Motorists were advised to reduce speed, obey posted signs, and watch for emergency personnel and equipment.
