News: New Mexico State Police ID victims of Otero County wreck

OTERO COUNTY, NM - New Mexico State Police have released new details on a crash that killed two people in Otero County on Saturday night.

In a news release, the NMSP identified two drivers who died in the wreck, 40-year-old Alberto Dominguez Garcia of Albuquerque and 82-year-old Vaud Alonzo Burton of Ardmore, Oklahoma.

Troopers responded to the scene on U.S. Highway 54 at mile marker 98 between Tularosa and Carrizozo at about 7:41 p.m.

An investigation found that Garcia was driving a 2017 Honda passenger vehicle south on Highway 54 when he crossed over the center lane and struck a 2022 Nissan passenger vehicle driven by Burton head-on.  It is not yet clear what caused the Honda to cross over the center lane.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.  Both appeared to have been wearing seatbelts.  The NMSP is still investigating the crash, our Albuquerque car accident attorney adds, and said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
