The accident happened on Interstate 40 near milepost 68 in Thoreau at about 7 a.m.

The initial investigation by State Police found that the driver of a westbound Volvo passenger vehicle swerved onto the left shoulder and back onto the roadway before flipping and rolling several times.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Ruth Cisneros, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Four children in the vehicle, ranging in age from 2 to 7, were taken to an Albuquerque hospital with undisclosed injuries. None of the occupants of the car were wearing seat belts.

The NMSP is continuing its investigation into the crash and said that alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor.
