INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indiana State Police said a multi-vehicle wreck in Indianapolis Thursday claimed the life of a 9-year-old boy.
WRTV reports ISP and first responders were called to the scene on Interstate 465 near South Meridian Street on the city's south side at about 5:20 p.m.
Investigators determined that the driver of a semi-truck did not slow down while approaching traffic that was backed up on I-465, and collided with another semi as well as three passenger vehicles.
The boy, who was in the back seat of one of the passenger vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 5-year-old girl suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to an area hospital.
State Police said the truck driver's excessive speed was a contributing factor in the accident, but neither drugs nor alcohol was believed to have been involved.
