3 dead in head-on collision on U.S. Highway 82 in Lea County

LOVINGTON, NM - The New Mexico State Police have released information about a triple fatal crash that occurred in Lea County on Friday morning.

The two-vehicle accident happened on U.S. Highway 82 near milepost 163 west of Lovington.

State Police said their initial investigation determined that the driver of a Toyota four-door passenger vehicle was heading east in the westbound lane of U.S. 82 at about 6 a.m. and struck a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck head-on.

The Toyota driver, 24-year-old Miguel Angel Delacruz of Hagerman, and the Chevrolet driver, 74-year-old Emigdio Montano of Lovington, were both pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Toyota was also killed. That victim's identity has not yet been released.

A 31-year-old passenger in the Chevrolet was injured and taken to an area hospital.

Investigators said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, and seat belts do not appear to have been properly worn.  Should any additional information come to light, our Albuquerque car accident lawyer will update this news blog.
