6 hurt, including 5 children, in crash at Portage apartment complex

PORTAGE, MI - A pickup truck accident at a Portage apartment complex Tuesday night injured six people, including five children.

WOOD reports the incident happened at the Milham Meadows Apartments in the area of Milham Avenue and Oakland Drive.  The Portage Department of Public Safety said the driver of a Dodge Ram was traveling through the complex at a high speed at about 6:30 p.m. when he struck a curb, lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree.

Five children were riding in the bed of the truck and at least one was ejected from the vehicle.  They were all taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not regarded as life-threatening.  Authorities said the driver, a 35-year-old man from Kalamazoo, was extricated from the vehicle and then tried to flee on foot.

He was later detained and taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.  Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, and charges are expected to be filed.
