8 injured, 4 critically, in Van Buren County rollover wreck

VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI - Eight people were injured, four critically, in a collision in Van Buren County on Tuesday afternoon.

WNBD reports two vehicles were involved in the incident in the 24000 block of M-43 at about 3:12 p.m.   According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office, the driver of a westbound Ford Econoline van crossed over the center line.  The driver of an oncoming GMC Yukon XL swerved enough to avoid a head-on crash but the vehicles still collided.

The van, which had six passengers, rolled over from the impact.  One woman was ejected and multiple other occupants were trapped in the van.

The GMC driver, a 37-year-old Jackson, Michigan man, the Ford driver, a 32-year-old Van Buren County man, and the six van passengers were all taken to the hospital, where four of the victims were listed in critical condition.

Sheriff's deputies believe the van driver may have nodded off due to extreme fatigue, based on his statements and the account of a front seat passenger.

It is not believed that drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, which closed M-43 in the area for about four hours.
