Driver dead after vehicle crashes, catches fire in Keeler Township

KEELER TOWNSHIP, MI - The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal car wreck that occurred last week in Keeler Township.

MLive.com reports the incident happened in the area of County Road 687 and County Road 342 at about 8:45 p.m. A preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta was heading east on County Road 342 and went through the intersection at about 70 miles per hour without slowing down.

The vehicle went airborne, crashed head-on into a large tree, and caught fire.  The driver, a 37-year-old man from the Sister Lakes area, was trapped in the car.

A witness called 911 and said she tried to help the driver but the car's doors were locked.  Sheriff's deputies also tried to rescue the man but were unsuccessful.  The victim was not wearing a seat belt, authorities said.

Police were attempting to recover the car's Event Data Recorder as part of their investigation.
