Driver killed when vehicle crashes into tree in Ionia County

IONIA COUNTY, MI - One person was killed and another hospitalized after their vehicle crashed Saturday morning in Ionia County, authorities said.

MLive.com reports the wreck took place on East Riverside Drive near Bugbee Road.  An investigation determined that the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox lost control of the vehicle sometime before 10 a.m., drove off the roadway and crashed into a tree.

Ionia County Sheriff's Office deputies and local first responders arrived to find the driver, a 27-year-old man, dead at the scene.  He was not wearing a seat belt. A 30-year-old woman who was his passenger was seriously injured and was listed in stable condition after being taken to an area hospital.  Both occupants of the vehicle are from the Lyons area.

Speed was believed to have been a contributing factor in the accident.
