STURGIS TOWNSHIP, MI - Michigan State Police said a motorcyclist died following a crash on U.S. 12 in Sturgis on Monday morning, according to the Sturgis Journal.
Investigators determined that the motorcycle rider was heading west when he tried to pass a semi-truck and a car near Shimmel Road shortly before 7 a.m.
As he passed the truck, the motorcyclist crashed head-on into another vehicle that was going east. The rider, a 32-year-old man from Sturgis, died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, state police said.
The 40-year-old woman from White Pigeon who was driving the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.
MSP said it is believed that the motorcyclist's speed and improper passing were contributing factors in the wreck, but neither drugs nor alcohol were involved. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
